Pupils Protest Against AI-Delivered College Course: "We Might Have Just Asked ChatGPT"

Multiple learners at a British university shared significant dissatisfaction after realizing their technology program was predominantly delivered through artificial intelligence.

New Path Dreams Dashed

James and another participant were among 41 students who enrolled in a programming program expecting to move into tech careers through a government-funded development program.

Yet the hopes were rapidly diminished when they encountered computer-created materials being read by an synthetic voice.

When we submitted projects that was AI-generated, we'd be removed from the college,ā€ remarked James during a recorded confrontation with his teacher.

Repeated Concerns and University Response

Students repeatedly brought up concerns about the computer-generated resources, however the university looks to have continued using computer-created materials.

Interestingly, the university maintains firm policies restricting student use of AI, saying that presenting AI-generated work equals academic misconduct.

Increasing Phenomenon in Colleges

The case echoes a wider movement across universities more and more using AI tools for instruction, course material generation, and customized evaluation.

  • Recent surveys suggest nearly a quarter of UK instructors now use AI in their instruction practices
  • National reports have celebrated generative AI's capacity to revolutionize education
  • Yet many students find the situation demoralizing rather than transformative

Telltale Evidence of AI Generation

Students observed various clues indicating AI-generated materials:

  1. Mixed language style between American and British English
  2. Suspicious file titles
  3. Basic information with periodic mentions to irrelevant US legislation
  4. Voiceover abruptly switching to a Spanish accent before returning

Student Frustration and Future Concerns

One student voiced significant anxiety about his professional trajectory, stating he felt locked with this courseā€ after putting considerable effort.

Owen, experiencing a career change, said he had chosen the module for valuable knowledge rather than just a credential.

ā€œBeing seated there with content that is just not worth anyone's time,ā€ he stated, ā€œwhile you could be using that time actually engaging with something valuable, is genuinely discouraging.ā€

In spite of university claims about preserving educational quality, learners felt the final inclusion of real teachers was inadequate and belatedā€ to fix their basic complaints.
